Unheralded American player Reilly Opelka took out Serbian great and top seed Novak Djokovic to set up a Brisbane International 2025pera play, men's singles semi-final date against big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. (More Tennis News)

Opelka, 27, took the first set against the 24-time Grand Slam champion in 58 minutes and then wrapped up the second in 43 for a 7-6(6), 6-3 win at Pat Rafter Arena on Friday.

He is now the lowest-ranked semi-finalist in tournament history, but the first American to beat Djokovic since Sam Querrey at Wimbledon in 2016. Djokovic was aiming to win a 100th tour-level title, and first Brisbane International crown.

Earlier in the day, 21-year-old Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard fired as many as 19 aces to tame Jakub Mensik of Czechia 7-5, 7-6(5) in one hour and 34 minutes.

In the second semi-final, Jiri Lehecka of Czechia will take on second-seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria. Unseeded Lehecka defeated Nicolas Jarry of Chile 6-4, 6-4 while Dimitrov made the last four following local hope Jordan Thompson's retirement due to injury.

The Brisbane International, an ATP Tour 250 event, is part of the Australian Open Series. The season-opening Grand Slam in Melbourne starts on January 12.
