The Kerala government approved a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for Wayanad district, which was severely impacted by landslides, amid ongoing disagreements with the Centre over insufficient financial assistance.
The initiative includes the construction of two townships to provide a safe and sustainable living environment for the affected population. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, speaking at a press conference after the cabinet meeting, explained that the townships would be located in two selected plantation estates in Kalpetta and Kottappady. These townships will include essential amenities such as housing, schools, health centres, anganwadis, markets, parking areas, playgrounds, drinking water, sanitation facilities, and more, PTI reported.

He also acknowledged the challenges in acquiring suitable land to house all survivors in one location, noting that the proposed land would be acquired under the Disaster Management Act of 2005.

In an incredible run-up to the final, the Indian men's hockey team did not concede a single goal and conjured imperious scorelines of 4-0 (against Hungary), 7-0 (against United States), 9-0 (vs Japan) and 10-0 (vs France in the semi-finals).
After resettlement, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured that families affected by the landslides would retain ownership of the land they currently hold in the impacted areas. For those who prefer to live outside the township, a compensation of Rs 15 lakh will be provided, he added.
Vijayan also announced that the final list of families affected by the landslides would be published by January 25. The Uralunkal Labour Contract Society has been selected as the contractor for the projecthola play, which will be monitored by a panel headed by the Chief Minister.
